A fortnights holiday in France left me musing about woodland management there compared to the UK. In France over the whole country their woodlands are much more closely tied in to the local economy and culture. In most rural areas houses have their winters firewood supply stacked outside and almost every woodland is obviously under active management.
But in one area at least they are lagging behind! Following a major thunderstorm a number of trees lost limbs near our hotel, and I watched with horror an arboriculturalcontractor (obviously a professional by the way he used his ropes and harnesses) wielding a top handled chainsaw high in the crown of an oak with no helmet, or chainsaw gloves, trousers or boots!
