May and June is the best time to be out in the woods. We have chosen to run more members events this year, so that as many as possible have an opportunity to meet other members, and consequently the last few weeks have seen me on the motorways at weekends to events from Devon to Northumberland.
The beginning of May saw an event at Wort and Gratton Woods, near Barnstaple in Devon. The owner and staff from the Exmoor National Park led the event which looked at restoration of PAWS (plantations on ancient woodland sites).
The next event was at Rawhaw Wood, near Kettering. Huw and Carolyn Ross, the owners, have restored this hazel coppice with standards woodland over the last 15 years so now it is in cycle and very productive. Huw and Carolyn produce a variety of coppice products and charcoal, and have managed to get permission to build a house in their woodland.
The end of May saw me heading north, to David Parkins newly planted woodland at Gorfenletch near Morpeth. David bought several hectares of agricultural land six years ago, and has been progressively planting it up with mixed broadleaves.
A varied mix of woodlands, and a great opportunity to meet members.
